Final Design-Beeman Park Gym

The Local Volunteer Neighborhood Oversight Committee (LVNOC) had the last of three public hearings on the design and placement of a new modern gym at Beeman Park. This last hearing was held on July 20, 2017 in the old gym at the park. The Department of Public Works/Bureau of Engineering (BOE) presented the final architectural drawings showing the design of the building, the placement of the gym, community center and office in the park, and the color palate was chosen. LVNOC voted to approve the design and color after which the Committee was disbanded.

The BOE’s final drawings incorporated the community suggestion from the two prior public hearing. If you would like to see the complete BOE plan approved by LVNOC., contact Jessica Fugate. Her contact info is below.  Click here to see two samples of the plans : Beeman Park 1 and Beeman Park 2.

This plan allows for 45 Parking slots and two extra street parking spaces due to closing the west entry driveway. The plan does not impact park space and addresses safety issues. The location of the building in the final plan will be less visible to the residents surrounding the park and gives maximum visibility of park activities to park personnel from their offices. The existing gym will have to be demolished in order to construct the new gym and temporary offices will be set up on the basketball courts.  The anticipated construction start date is winter of 2019.

There will be no stage in the new facility due to the large number of parking spaces required by code. The plan without a stage, however, still requires a zoning variance. The BOE request will be based on use and square footage. LVNOC was informed that there will be no increase in park use: programs and operations will remain the same.

The next public hearing will be with Cultural Affairs, then Recreation and Parks, then LA Fund Kids steering committee. And at a future date there will be a CEQA review. The estimated cost of the project is $10,000,000. Presently there is $3,000,000 in prop K funds.
